How to choose a gemstone engagement ring

Choose a gemstone engagement ring by considering color, everyday wear and the setting together. The stone you love should suit the way you will use the ring. Ask about the individual gem, any treatments and its care requirements before agreeing on a design.

A colored gemstone can make a ring feel distinctive without needing an oversized setting. Begin with the hue and proportions that appeal to you, then discuss which stones and constructions could work for your brief.

Start with color and proportion

Look at the stone in different lighting and ask for views that show its outline and depth. Decide whether you want the color to dominate or to sit quietly within the metal. Compare the actual dimensions in millimeters as well as the carat weight.

Keep your references specific: a cool blue, a warm pink or a strong green tells the atelier more than “something unusual.” A stone's name alone does not describe the exact color you will see.

Which gemstones suit an engagement ring?

Gem durability involves resistance to scratches, breakage and environmental effects. The Mohs scale measures scratch resistance; it does not answer every question about daily wear. GIA explains this distinction in its guide to gem durability.

Sapphire as a starting point

Sapphire is a useful stone to discuss for a frequently worn ring. GIA rates it 9 on the Mohs scale and describes excellent toughness. Treatment and the individual stone still affect care, so ask for the relevant details. See GIA's sapphire care guide.

Other colored stones need their own assessment

If you are drawn to aquamarine, morganite, tourmaline or another gem, ask about that particular stone's suitability and setting. Do not assume the care needs of one gemstone apply to another. GIA's colored gemstone engagement ring guide provides further background.

Color in Orrling creations

These pieces show different approaches to color in Orrling's work. They are references for a conversation, rather than a claim that every High Jewellery piece is suited to everyday engagement wear.

  • VOLANT places a natural blue sapphire within a winged diamond composition in white gold. Its price is available on request.
  • Arlecchino combines a green tourmaline center with London blue topaz, pink sapphires and diamonds. It shows how contrasting colors can become part of the whole design.
  • OUTREMER centers a 22 ct aquamarine in a substantial High Jewellery composition. Use it to explore color and scale, then discuss the proportions and stone appropriate to your own ring.

Choose the setting around the stone and the wearer

Ask how the proposed setting supports the gem and which parts remain exposed. Consider the ring's height, the space between your fingers and how a future wedding band might sit beside it. Discuss the design with your normal activities in mind.

For a stronger emphasis on the metal's shape, see our sculptural engagement ring guide. A sculptural design and a colored stone can be explored together, with the construction considered from the beginning.

Questions to ask before commissioning a gemstone ring

  1. Which specific gemstone is included in the proposal, and is it natural or laboratory-grown?
  2. Which treatments are known, what documentation is available, and what care follows from them?
  3. What dimensions, metal and setting are proposed?
  4. What does the total quotation include, and what remains to be selected?
  5. What delivery estimate, sizing arrangements and order terms apply to this piece?

Check the engagement ring cost guide for the price factors to compare. A general gemstone name is not enough to establish a complete ring price.

Questions about custom gemstone engagement rings

Can I use a stone I already own?

Send the atelier details of the existing piece before a design is agreed. Its condition, dimensions and suitability need to be assessed; reuse should not be assumed from a photograph alone.

Can I select colored gemstones in the online ring builder?

The online builder is the route for its available setting and diamond combinations. For a colored gemstone brief, begin with personal design and ask what is possible.

How do I start from the United States?

US delivery is available for online orders. Send your design enquiry with preferred colors, ring size, budget, location and any important date. Discuss stone availability, the agreed specification and delivery terms before placing a personal order.
